Mandatory Maritime Dangerous Goods Training now available:
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has stipulated that there will be mandatory training requirements under Chapter 1.3 of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code with the requirement that all shore based personnel involved in the transport of dangerous goods for sea be provided with appropriate mandatory training prior to 1 January 2010.
The training requirements specify that relevant personnel must be provided with training in the contents of dangerous goods provisions commensurate with their responsibilities. AMSA has stipulated it will be the employer's responsibility to determine:
- Those personnel that need to be trained
- The degree of training they require
- The method of training they use to enable them to comply with the provisions of the IMDG code.
For more information on the AMSA mandatory training requirements click here to read an information sheet. Of critical importance is the AMSA statement that:
"The use of untrained or inappropriately trained personnel to prepare a shipment would be a breach of the requirements of the IMDG Code and could result in shipments being prohibited from loading"
The training required is function specific and covers a range of personnel within the supply chain from the shipper to the person placing cargo on the ship. Fortunately, the accreditation training provided by your industry association enables the user to select the functions that apply to his or her role and take the training that specifically relates to that role.
To determine the training required for specific functions within the supply chain click on the attachment entitled Function Specific Requirements.
