Jenny Eutick – Regional Director Queensland, ACS is leaving Customs

After more than 12 years in Customs, with the last three and a half years as Regional Director Queensland, Jenny Eutick has left to take on a new challenge with Centrelink as Area Manager for South East Queensland.

Jenny has played a key leadership role in Queensland both inside Customs and in developing close relationships with industry and other government agencies.

Christine Marsden-Smedley will be taking up the role of Regional Director Queensland with effect from early September. In the interim Steve Wood will be acting Regional Director .

Customs Press Release - Imports of Kava

28 June 2007

The Commonwealth Government has moved to tighten import restrictions on kava. This has been necessary to combat kava abuse and significant associated health problems in Indigenous communities.

From 26 June 2007, the importation of kava will not be allowed except for medical or scientific purposes.

The existing approval allows the importation of up to 2kg of kava in the accompanied baggage of an incoming passenger (aged 18 years or over) to Australia. This will continue, in recognition that kava has traditional ceremonial and cultural uses for Pacific Islanders.

Customs withdraws Item 50A Claims!

In a surprise development, Customs has announced (ACN 2005/73) that it will not be proceeding with its demands to recover duty allegedly underpaid as a result of past administration errors.

Hunt & Hunt acted for many aggrieved importers in opposing the recovery action. Our representations cast doubt on Customs’ legal position and questioned the equity of it pursuing the demands.

Customs - GST Deferral Reports

Currently Customs rovides a monthly re ort for im orters detailing all im ort transactions for the month on which GST has been deferred. Customs currently charge $66 er month to rovide this re ort.

The new Integrated Cargo System (ICS rovides customs brokers with the ability to create these re orts for im orters free of any cost recovery charges.
