AFIF 2020 National Conference and Gala Dinner

On behalf of the AFIF Board and the organising sub-committee we are delighted to announce that the AFIF 2020 National Conference and Gala Dinner will be held in Sydney at the Novotel Sydney, Brighton Beach, on Friday 29th May 2020. The 1 Day program will be focussed on providing vital important content and speakers tackling the topics and issues members need. The 2020 Conference organising committee are planning an engaging interactive conference, followed by a sensational gala dinner in the evening.

Details of limited sponsorship and exhibition packages for this exciting 1 day event will be released in the New Year.  Circle Friday 29 May 2020 in your diary, it’s shaping up again to be the annual industry event not to be missed and we’re hoping to see you there!  Of course we will also be hosting a Welcome Reception on the evening of May 28th.

ABF – International Cooperation Assists in the Seizure of Smuggled Tobacco

Australia’s joint agency Illicit Tobacco Taskforce (ITTF) seized three large shipments of illicit tobacco worth more than $11 million in evaded duty over the holiday period thanks to the strong partnerships it has built with international counterpart agencies. Full Details in Weekly News

DoA – Biosecurity Charges Increase from 1 January 2020

Minister for Agriculture, Hon Bridget McKenzie has announced that the Government will not be proceeding with the Biosecurity Imports Levy as announced in the 2018-19 Budget. Instead the way forward will include expanded cost recovery fees and charges from 1 January 2020 and an alternative Biosecurity levy will be developed in consultation with industry. An Alternative Biosecurity Levy industry Working Group including AFIF, has been formed to work with the Department of Agriculture and advise the Minister for Agriculture in the design and implementation of an ‘Alternative Biosecurity Levy’. HLB Mann Judd – Changes to FBT Rules for Car Parking Benefits

The ATO have recently rewritten their view of car parking fringe benefits in TR 2019/D5, which replaces TR 96/26 (now withdrawn). This will potentially impact you if your employees benefit from a parking space provided. Full details in Weekly News

ACCC – Views Sought on Competition Exemption for Liner Shipping - Repeated     

Part X of the Competition and Consumer Act permits liner shipping operators to enter into agreements with each other about commercial matters such as freight rates, the vessels to be used, and the quantity and kinds of cargo carried on particular trade routes. The 2015 Harper Review recommended that Part X exemption be repealed and the ACCC develop a class exemption for liner shipping agreements. The ACCC is seeking comments on a possible class exemption for liner shipping from competition laws, in a discussion paper released this week. IATA – Air Freight Demand Down 1.1% in November 2019

IATA released data for global air freight markets showing that demand, measured in freight tonne kilometres (FTKs), decreased by 1.1% in November 2019, compared to the same period in 2018. This marks the thirteenth consecutive month of year-on-year declines in freight volumes. Asia-Pacific airlines saw demand for air freight contract by 3.7% in November 2019, compared to the same period in 2018. This was the sharpest drop in freight demand of any region for the month.  Capacity increased by 1.8%. Full details and link in Weekly News

IATA – Industry Steps Up Efforts Against Rogue Lithium Battery Shipments  

IATA are renewing calls for governments to crack down on manufacturers of counterfeit batteries and of mis-labelled and non-compliant shipments introduced into the supply chain, by issuing and enforcing criminal sanctions on those responsible. The campaign includes three specific initiatives; new incident reporting and alert system for airlines, industry awareness campaign on the dangers of shipping undeclared and mis-declared lithium batteries and facilitation of a joined-up industry approach.

AFIF Training Course - Shipping Lithium Batteries by Air

AFIF supports the IATA initiative to ensure the safe transportation of Lithium Batteries shipments. AFIF Training provides a Shipping Lithium Batteries by Air Course for Shippers and Freight Forwarders.

A one day course designed to give Shippers of Lithium Ion and Lithium Metal Batteries the skills and knowledge to pack and ship lithium ion and lithium metals cells and batteries by air transport, in compliance with Australian Legislation and the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.

IMDG (Dangerous Goods by Sea) Training Validity/Expiry   

If you or your staff hold IMDG Certification under IMDG Code 2016, the expiry date is 31st December 2019 - then you must complete a 1 day IMDG Re-certification course BEFORE 31 December 2019, to remain certified.  Failure to do so will require undertaking the 2 day IMDG (Dangerous Goods by Sea) Full Acceptance Course.
