FCB
Issue 10 December 2010

Good Afternoon,

Welcome to the "end of year" edition of The New Workplace.

2010 has been a busy and exciting year, with significant success for the FCB Group. As we move into the holiday season, we are proud to announce that, following the mid-year success of FCB Technology in the Anthill Smart 100 awards, FCB Workplace Law has recently been recognised as ACQ magazine's Australian Law Firm of the Year for Employment Law. We are very proud of this achievement, and would like to take this opportunity to thank you, our clients, colleagues and supporters, for helping make our success possible.

In this edition of The New Workplace, Tom Brett and Katharine Leitch review the excitement and events in the world of workplace law for 2010. There certainly has been no shortage of excitement and this light-hearted review reminisces about the year with a focus on highlights such as the introduction of Modern Awards, political movements, a media-frenzied sexual harassment claim, the Fair Work Act and Fair Work Australia. Also in this edition, our FCB HR article looks at the decade ahead for HR professionals, and our FCB Technology article considers "Cloud computing" as a phenomena of the future that can add value to your business.

To stay on top of the latest news in human resources and workplace relations, visit FCB Group's Smart Workplace at www.smartworkplace.com.au; the leading online resource for all HR, people management, employment relations and legal professionals.

As always, I welcome your feedback on this edition and any suggestions for content in future editions.

As this is our final publication for 2010, I would also like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the whole FCB Group team, to wish you and your families the best of wishes for the upcoming holiday season.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Welcome to smarter ways of managing your people.
Welcome to the FCB Group.

Year in Review 2010

Unsure whether the confusion and bewilderment was the result of a lingering festive season hangover or something more sinister inflicted by Fair Work Act, (either way) employers started the year off confronted with the introduction of Modern Awards. The Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) had reviewed thousands of State and Federal awards and subsequently created 122 industry and occupation awards. These awards commenced on 1 January 2010, but most included transitional provisions to phase in changes in wages, loadings and penalties over a five-year period, commencing 1 July. Everyone slowly learnt that this confusion could not be fixed by fizzy tablets or coffee.
