“Countdown to Change” Three major E-Commerce developments are programmed to impact on our industry within the next 3 – 4 months. In order to assist our members we have prepared a brief overview and step by step check list for you to ensure that your business will be ready for these compulsory changes to electronic cargo reporting for air and sea. The three programs are:
Please click here to view the detailed information. We think it is worth mentioning that each of these will require some process change within your business. If you haven’t already considered it, it may be worth looking at the items together so that only one change in process is necessary.
AFIF 2004 Conference Feedback The AFIF 2004 held at the Radisson Resort, Gold Coast, between May 19 & 21 was a great success according to all the feedback we have received. The participants tell us it was the best ever, in terms of both content and social functions. Sponsors and exhibitors have also reported a very positive outcome for their involvement. Obviously we want to do it bigger and better next time, so we are now looking for a suitable venue and will get back to you in due course. In the meantime if you would like to view the speaker presentations and or the photograph gallery, please click here.
AFIF 2004 Golf Challenge The record number of teams contested the challenge and the outright corporate winners were AMI with Chris. Channel, Julian Keeling, Peter Lilley and Peter McNamara, the victorious foursome. In second place by a quarter of one point were the AFIF official team relegating the former two time winners UAC into third place! Furthermore one group was skillful enough to score an eagle during the round and will receive a case of wine from Eagle Datamation International. Of course they should share that with the people who certified the score card!
CMR (ICS) Exports Training As previously advised AFIF and CBFCA will be partnering with Customs to deliver refresher training to the industry on the exports phase of the new ICS. We will shortly produce a schedule of dates in each capital city and give you the facility to book on line. As we were able to source adequate funding from the Tradegate Development Fund, this training will be delivered free of charge to the industry.
FAPAA Executive Council Meeting 2004 The 31st Executive Council Meeting of the Federation of Asia – Pacific Aircargo Associations was held immediately after the AFIF Conference, at the same venue. Representatives from 14 of the 15 Member Countries were in attendance and delegates discussed a number of vital issues including the liability concerns arising from the Schenker / Siemens case IATA senior managers from the region were on hand to participate in the discussions. FAPAA has formally requested IATA to consider as a matter of urgency, changes to the neutral air waybill and IATA Resolution 505 in order to protect forwarders from the possible ramification of a similar outcome in the future.
Sydney Airport Chief to Increase Focus on Freight Mr. Max Moore-Wilton, CEO of Sydney Airports, addressed members of the NSW Airfreight Export Council recently and promised an increased focus on freight. Detailed information on plans to relocate air cargo terminals (with the future expansion of the passenger terminals) would be released in due course and he promised greater support, by the airport of activities and logistics of freight movements.
International Air Cargo Security As foreshadowed at the AFIF 2004 Conference, DOTARS will soon be releasing details of changes to the international air cargo security plan for Australia. Significantly the program will be extended to include domestic freight and the current Regulated Agent regime will move to an ‘outcome’ base rather than process base. How this will impact on your current programs we are yet to be advised, however we are urging government to ensure that any changes do not increase the work load and or costs to industry. We will keep you posted.
Changes at Qantas Freight, Sydney Brian Hogan has now taken on his new
roll as Manager, Sydney Freight Terminal and he is busy addressing some of
the major issues of concern to our members. AFIF Submission to ACCC Review of AADA AFIF is a designated secondary shipper body ordained by the Federal Department of Transport and in this capacity, was requested by ACCC to make a submission to its review of the Australia-Asia Discussion Agreement (AADA) exemption from Part 10 of the Trade Practices Act. For those members not familiar with it, the AADA replaced what used to be called the Shipping Conference serving the East-Asia Australia Liner Shipping trade has ACCC approval for its member lines to discuss as a group, many aspects of their activities – freight rates, capacity, services etc. Our position put to ACCC had
a number of aspects, not least of which, was to urge the AADA member lines
to try and bring stability to rates in the
trade.
Container X-Ray and Examination Facilities (CEF) The operation and effectiveness of these facilities has recently been the subject of both A Customs Internal Review and the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) Independent Review. AFIF has made submission and has been interviewed for its opinions on these facilities. There are many positives, however the restricted hours of operation and the issue of CTO storage are still outstanding and we will continue to push for equity and resolution to these matters. We will advise the outcome of the Customs Internal Review and the ANAO Audit asap.
