DoA – Measures for 2019-20 BMSB Risk Season Underway – Update

Freight Forwarders and Master Consolidators Beware – Overseas Treatment Providers Rejecting ‘Too Full’ Containers for Treatment     

DoA has advised AFIF that some overseas treatment providers are rejecting containers which have been packed too full and are unable to be properly treated. DoA and NZ Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) have published a joint Factsheet on BMSB Consignment Suitability, detailing the packing requirements for treatment providers to effectively treat consignments of target high risk goods. DoA has issued a Notice to industry advising the latest situation on – Season duration, Master Consolidator Identification (MC ID) Registration and Declarations, Booking an Inspection, New Request for Inspection Form, Offshore Treatment Providers Scheme and latest list of providers,    Treatment reporting requirements – AEI, Utilising AEPCOMM for target high risk goods, FAQs Links -What happens to your goods on arrival during the 2019-20 BMSB season. IATA Requires IATA Cargo Agents to Submit Employee ULD Handling Certification, or non-Handling Declaration, by 30 September 2019 Deadline – Non-Compliance Action to Commence 

In June, AFIF advised members that IATA had written to all IATA Cargo Agents handling Unit Load Devices (ULDs) to submit details of employees holding a valid ULD Certificate - or a non-handling declaration - by 5 September 2019. This week, IATA issued a Notice to IATA Cargo Agents advising the final deadline for submission of the details is 30 September 2019. Non-compliance will trigger IATA action, with the Cargo Agent placed on review by the Cargo Agency Commissioner. Details in Weekly News

AFIF Adds More Load Distribution and Restraint Training Course Dates

ABF Stops 1.2 Tonnes of Precursor from Being Manufactured into 'ICE' with Street Value of $750 Million  

ABF officers in Sydney have detected and prevented more than 1,200 kilograms of ephedrine from reaching illicit drug manufacturers and being used to produce ‘ice’. A sea container was examined at the Sydney CEF and officers noted 127 boxes of ephedrine weighing 1266 kgs hidden behind a large amount of furniture. That amount of ephedrine is capable of producing approximately one tonne of methamphetamine, (ice) which would have a street value of around $750 million. 2 men were arrested and charged after a controlled delivery. Home Affairs-ABF – Tariff Concessions Gazette    

The Commonwealth of Australia Tariff Concessions Gazette (the Gazette) gives legal effect to the creation of a number of instruments such as By-Laws, Tariff Concession Orders (TCOs), TCO Revocations and Determinations. At least 50 new TCOs are made each month. When a new TCO is made, it is published in the Gazette. Details and link to latest Gazette in Weekly News

MUA – Industrial Action Hutchison Ports SICTL Sydney 20 September 2019

The MUA have notified a stoppage of work of 4 hours duration, commencing 10am Friday 20th September 2019. During this period of Industrial unrest Hutchison Ports Australia will endeavour to minimise any delays where possible. Please plan your trips accordingly without this 4 hr period. Geoff Young Bids Farewell to AMI after 34 Years

AFIF would like to advise that our good friend and industry colleague Geoff Young, VP - South Pacific for Air Menzies International (AMI), will retire this week from the company after 34 years with the business. Geoff has been a strong advocate for development and change in our industry and served for over seven years as a Director on the Boards’ of AFIF and its airfreight only forerunner, AFAFF, during the ‘90’s. AFIF CEO, Brian Lovell has paid tribute to Geoff’s service, details in the Weekly News

Menzies Aviation Cargo, Australia – Finalist in Global Ground Handling Awards

Menzies Aviation’s Australian Cargo business has made the shortlist for the finals of the annual Pride of Ground Handling Awards for Best Cargo Handling Operation. The Ground Handling Awards are this year held in Amsterdam on 5th November and Menzies Aviation Australia are one of six finalists, including the likes of SATS (Singapore, Changi Airport) and WFS (JFK Intl Airport, New York) Details of finalists in Weekly News

Innovation is the Only Way to Keep Amazon at Bay, says DHL         

Innovation is vital for logistics operators wishing to fend off competition from e-commerce giants seeking to enter the sector.  “We are in the digital revolution, which came in the wake of globalisation, which played a big role in driving growth at DHL. There needs to be a shift to autonomous processes, but not to the exclusion of workers, more a case of them working with robots. So we will look to roll out robots in regions with high labour costs, and high labour shortages first, as these regions are much more immediately dependent.” Full Loadstar report in Weekly News

IATA – Trade War Impacting Air Freight Demand – July 2019 Result – Repeated

IATA released data for global air freight markets showing that demand, measured in freight tonne kilometres (FTKs), contracted by 3.2% in July 2019, compared to the same period in 2018. This marks the 9th consecutive month of year-on-year decline in freight volumes. Asia-Pacific airlines saw demand for air freight contract by 4.9% in July 2019, compared to the same period in 2018. IMDG (Dangerous Goods by Sea) Training Validity/Expiry   

If you or your staff hold IMDG Certification under IMDG Code 2016, the expiry date is 31st December 2019 - then you must complete a 1 day IMDG Re-certification course BEFORE 31 December 2019, to remain certified.  Failure to do so will require undertaking the 2 day IMDG (Dangerous Goods by Sea) Full Acceptance Course.
